Kutná Hora is about an hour outside of Prague by train. The “bone
church” (
Sedlec Ossuary) was the main reason for this day trip. The church is actually in the
town of Sedlec, a small suburb of Kutná Hora. The inside of the church is decorated
with over 40,000 human skeletons. It was a little strange, but more fascinating
than eerie. The history is very interesting, and it is definitely worth a
visit.

A square in Kutná Hora |
We took a bus from there to Kutná Hora. We had done very little research
regarding this day so it came as no surprise that it ended up being a
little chaotic. After a 20 min bus ride we got off at the wrong stop. We had to quickly
find our way without a map or any real knowledge of where we were going or what
we were looking for. We knew we weren’t going to have much time in Kutná Hora
due to the train schedule, but we ended up spending almost all of it hurrying
around the town trying to figure out where the bus stop was located to get us
back to the main train station. We did end up with about 30 spare minutes. We hadn’t
eaten very much that day and needed a snack and a warm drink. We found a cute café and shared an omelet. Unfortunately we didn’t get the name or a picture
of this place. The waitress was very kind and helpful and told us that
taking the bus was not the best way to get back to the main train station. She gave
us directions to a different train station where a small train would take us to
the station to catch the train back to Prague. She mistakenly told
us the departure time was 30 min before it actually left so we hurried over
there, too. All of the hurrying left us little time to take pictures of Kutná
Hora or any of the other great churches there. It was a charming town, and we really enjoyed the day despite the hurriedness.

That night we ate
at
Merenda, a restaurant a couple of blocks from our apartment. It is a
nonsmoking place. It actually does have a smoking pub downstairs, but the
restaurant upstairs is smoke-free. I had pork with bread dumplings and gravy. Andy
had roast beef with bread dumplings and a cream sauce with berries.
Both were really good and the beer was excellent. Merenda is part of a beer
alliance that is committed to serving beer from small to medium breweries
across the Czech Republic. It was fun to try a few microbrews from around the
country.
