It was our last day in Prague and we were excited to do some
things we hadn’t yet had a chance to do, but we started off the day doing what
we had done every other day…going to Wenceslas Square. It’s hard to describe
why we liked it there so much. The food booths in the large square (essentially
a boulevard) made standing outside inviting even when we were freezing. There is
something electric about it that made it a nice place to hang out for a while
each day. Many demonstrations, protests and celebrations have occurred in Wenceslas
Square throughout Prague’s history. Maybe it’s the energy from some of those
events that was palpable or maybe we just really liked hot wine. On this day we
also tried the delicious trdelnik (a round pastry with sugar, honey and
walnuts) and honey wine (Vcelovina), which was really good!

After finishing some
errands we needed to do to be ready to leave Prague the following morning, we
finally walked across Charles Bridge in the late afternoon. We were in Prague
when they ended daylight savings there, so it was getting dark by 4:30. But the
sun was out for the entire late afternoon and sunset, making it a beautiful
walk across a beautiful bridge. Once on the other side, we went to the Lennon
Wall and wandered around the Mala Strana neighborhood and up to the Church of
St. Nicholas (we didn’t go inside since they were
closing).

We took a tram back across the river to Nove
Mesto (New Town). We found a bar there to warm up and have a beer and a snack.
We used this time to look up a tankovna pub where they serve tank beer. We had
wanted to try beer from a tank, which is unpasteurized beer that is pressed out
of tanks using a high pressure air compressor so it remains free of any
bacteria, but had not run across a tankovna pub on our own. We walked over to U
Pinkasu, which is a block off of Wenceslas Square and tried a tank Pilsner
Urquell. It was good, not overly dissimilar from the pasteurized Pilsner
Urquell, but I’m sure if we had tried them
back-to-back the taste difference would have been much clearer.

We finished up
the day with another dinner at Merenda. We really enjoyed it there and its convenient
location made it a great place to wrap up our time in Prague. We had a few beers that night wanting to
finish off the list of microbrews we’d started the night before. It was a fun
end to our last day in Prague.

Cheers to our last night in Prague! (Note: I was a little behind, not a full beer ahead in the beer drinking seen here.) |
